1. Linux = OS
Myth: Linux is the OS (operating system or operating system)
Explanation: One, Linux is a kernel created by Linus Torvalds. Linux has similarities with Unix but not the modified version of Unix, because it belonged to a Linux or Unix-like commonly abbreviated * nix.
The kernel is the part that connects the operating system operating system with hardware. The operating system that uses Linux as the operating system kernel called Linux or in general also called distributions (origin of the word: distribution).
2. Text ... Text ... Text ... Text!
Myth: only Linux-based command line or text. Ga no GUI (Graphical User Interface) altogether.
Explanation: Linux is dependent on the command line, but you do not have to use it. Windows even so, there is a command prompt, but you do not have to use it right?
The Linux GUI is simply additional operating systems, commonly called GUIs on Linux desktop environment or window manager. Well, it sounds difficult but it is one of the advantages. With a concept like this, you are free to choose what you look like. Currently there are two desktop environment that is popular among users, the KDE and Gnome.
3. Muggles shall not use!
Myth: Linux can only be used by geeks, programmers, or computer experts.
Explanation: Hmmm let me stories (stale) a little bit, I install a distro of Linux Mint 9 LXDE edition on my home PC and install Linux Mint 10 on the PC belonging to my girlfriend. Users at home is my brother, he uses these distributions like Windows users. Yaa its activities do not much like ordinary Windows users, the transfer from the camera / phone to the computer, listen to music, editing photos, watching movies, typing, browsing, and even play games. He was not a programmer, there is not even an interest to explore the world of computers. Oh, if you think he was grown up and already know about computers, you're wrong, he is now sitting in class 1 SMP and has been using Linux Mint since 6th grade. In other words, one year already using Linux Mint.
Neither my boyfriend, he was not a programmer or computer expert, he only proficient in the field of counting money and making cakes (). At his home, the computer is also used by his nephew who was still sitting in the 1st grade.
In conclusion, anyone can use the Linux operating system. You do not need to be a scholar to use Linux computer.
4. Not Compatible
Myth: Linux is not compatible with files in Windows
Explanation: BULK, I repeat, MOST regular files that you use in Windows can be used also in Linux. Ranging from audio files (mp3, wav, ogg, etc.), video files (mkv, avi, mp4, rmvb, 3gp, etc.), office files (pdf, doc, docx, xls, xlsx , ppt, pptx, and so on), image files (jpg, raw, gif, png, bmp, and ... phew loads .... so on), and others. Yep well, all the files can also be used in Linux, different perhaps only application that handles the file. For example, if you used to use Winamp to listen to music from an mp3 file, you can use Rhythmbox in Linux to do the same.
Earlier, I say "most", in other words there are files that can only be used by applications in Windows and the application could be no alternative in Linux. To overcome this, you can use Wine to run Windows applications on Linux.
On this, are you going to blame Linux if there is a file that can not be used in Linux? One, you should blame the application developer that does not make the application for the multi-platform.
5. "Hello? There are people there?"
Myth: No one uses Linux, Linux is not popular.
Explanation: Huh? Wrong, absolutely wrong. If you're reading this means you're open blogspot, blogspot is one of Google's products, and do you know if Google has 1 million servers? Do you think Google's use of the Windows operating system for all its servers? No, Google does not use Windows for all servers because it would be very costly, Google chose to use Linux that is cheap but very well tested on security and stability.
On February 2010, Netcraft recorded 6 out of 10 web servers using Linux, 2 of 10 web server using FreeBSD (Linux distant relatives), one of 10 Using Windows, and one other unknown web server operating system. Another example, 459 of the 500 supercomputers in the world use Linux. One more thing, did you ever watch the movie Avatar by James Cameron? To render the film Avatar, Weta Digital (the company that handles visual effects for this film) 4000 server requires that all use the Ubuntu operating system.
Not to mention the countries that use Linux for the purposes of government, education, until the military.
6. "Can I help you?"
Myth: Linux does not have the technical support.
Explanation: Yes and no. Linux distributions largely does not have technical support but they have what we call "community". Community is a group of people who also wears distros, they will be happy to help as much as they are and to share knowledge and experience to other other users
Community is not restricted by time, 24 hours non-stop. In addition you can ask the community in various ways, ranging from chat, email, discussion forums up.
However, on some distributions, developers also have technical support free or paid. There are also other paid technical support that is not derived from the developer, but what we refer to as "third parties".
7. Bulletproof OS
Myth: Linux operating system free of viruses (or other malicious program).
Explanation: None of the perfect man-made objects. One of them is the operating system. Linux operating systems are not immune to the virus, but immune to the virus created for Windows.
As we know, the operating system that dominates today is Windows, Windows is the operating system most widely used in the world, especially the individual user. Hacker (or whateverthename) want to do the damage as much as possible so choose Windows as the target. Malicious programs made for Windows will not be due to the different way in Linux environment. Although run under Wine still will not infect Linux, malicious programs that infect only Wine alone.
Programs of this kind does not mean that no Linux but very little is "interested" make it and as we all know Linux is open source, which means anyone can look at the code, so that if the detected gaps will be quickly closed by anyone.
8. Fun. Fun. Fun.
Myth: There are no games on Linux.
Explanation: When using the phrase "no", then I certainly do not agree. Linux also has an assortment of game only the number (and quality) is not as good as games on Windows. But make no mistake, there are also games that quality is very good indeed and there are also large developers who sell games for Linux.
If it is less, you can play some Windows games on Linux using Wine, Cedega or Crossover. I myself often play Windows games on Linux than Linux native games. Some Windows game that I often played using Wine is: Starcraft, Counter Strike, Warcraft III, Diablo II, Stronghold, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 Plant vs. Zombie.
9. My hardware is hard
Myth: Many hardware that can not be used in Linux.
Explanation: Many years ago I was able to answer "true", but now the myth is not valid. Currently just a lot of hardware that can work with Linux. Indeed, sometimes the new hardware release has not worked well, but it will not be long, in a matter of a few weeks is likely the software will be able to work well with Linux.
10. Throw your Windows out!
Myth: I have to get rid of Windows if you want to use Linux.
Explanation: Ahai! This myth is very wrong, to use Linux, you do not have to get rid of Windows on the computer. There are several ways to use Linux without having to discard Windows is as follows:
1. Live Media: Live is one way to run Linux on a computer without having to install it to your hard drive. The medium used is usually a flash, external hard drive, flash card / memory card, CD to DVD.
2. Virtualization: Virtualization is a technique for running the operating system in the operating system. So you can run Linux in Windows. To do virtualization you need special software virtualization, such as VMWare, VirtualBox, QEMU.
3. Multiple boot: Multiple boot is a way to have 2 OS or more in the hard disk (for harddisknya sufficient). Multiple boot does not require special techniques to make it happen. All you have to do is by setting up a separate partition on the hard drive with the Windows partition and then install Linux on that partition. Later, if the installation process goes smoothly, you will always be faced with Grub (the boot loader) that contains the OS choice when booting.
3. Wubi: Wubi is an application to install Ubuntu (and its derivatives) into Windows, so although Ubuntu is the Ubuntu operating system but will be considered as usual by Windows software.
